Sowing instructions:

Sowing Valeriana officinalis seeds is straightforward and requires only a few steps. To achieve optimal results, follow these instructions:

1. Time of sowing: Start sowing in spring or fall. Ideally, sowing should take place in spring to ensure vigorous plant development.
2. Prepare the floor: Prepare the soil well by loosening it and removing weeds. Valeriana officinalis prefers a humus-rich and well-drained soil.
3. Sowing: Sprinkle the seeds evenly over the prepared soil surface and cover lightly with a thin layer of soil. Press the soil down gently to create good soil-seed contact.
4. Irrigation: Keep the soil evenly moist, but not too wet. Avoid flooding the seeds as this can impair their germination.
5. Light and temperature: Make sure that the sowing site receives sufficient sunlight, as Valeriana officinalis needs a lot of light. The ideal temperature for germination is between 15 and 20°C.
6. Germination and care: Germination can take around 2-4 weeks depending on conditions. Keep the young plants free of weeds and water regularly to promote healthy growth.

Tips and tricks:

• Valerian is an easy plant to care for, but it does need sufficient moisture. Make sure that the soil does not dry out.
• Mulch the soil around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weed growth.
• If you want to use valerian for its calming properties, harvest the roots in the fall of the second year. Dry them thoroughly before using them.

• Valeriana officinalis has been used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat sleep disorders, anxiety and stress.
• The plant also attracts beneficial insects such as bees and butterflies to the garden with its pleasant fragrance.
• Valerian is a hardy plant and can therefore also be grown successfully in colder climates.
