Sowing instructions

Sowing Morus alba seeds requires a little patience, but with the right preparation, germination is easy:

  1. Stratification: The seeds need a cold period to promote germination. Place them in the refrigerator (between damp sand or a damp cloth) for about 4-6 weeks.
  2. Sowing: After the cold period, you can plant the seeds in nutrient-rich, well-drained soil in spring or fall.
  3. Choice of location: The white mulberry loves sunny to semi-shady spots with good drainage.
  4. Germination: Keep the soil evenly moist. The germination period is usually 2-8 weeks.
  5. Pricking: As soon as the seedlings have reached a sufficient size, you can plant them in individual pots or directly in the open ground.

Harvest, use & storage

The fruits of the white mulberry ripen between May and July, depending on the climate. They are juicy, sweet and ideal for fresh consumption, dried fruit, jams or teas.

  • Harvest: Pick the ripe, white to slightly pink berries directly from the tree.
  • Use: The fruits can be eaten fresh, made into juice or dried. The leaves are also used in traditional medicine and as tea.
  • Storage: Fresh mulberries only keep for a few days. Dry them for longer storage or freeze them.

Tips and tricks

Winter protection: Young trees are sensitive to frost. Cover them with fleece or mulch for the first few years.
Cut: Annual pruning in winter promotes healthy growth and a rich harvest.
Irrigation: Water regularly during dry periods, but avoid waterlogging.
Pollination: Morus alba is mostly self-fertile, but benefits from other specimens in the vicinity.
