Sowing instructions

Sinapis alba, also known as white mustard, is a robust and easy-care plant that you can easily grow yourself. The ideal time for sowing is between April and June, when the soil is frost-free and well-moistened. It is best to sow the seeds directly outdoors, as white mustard germinates very quickly. Sow the seeds in rows about 20-30 cm apart. Cover them lightly with soil (approx. 1 cm deep) and keep the soil moist at all times until the first shoots appear. You will see the first green leaves after just 8 to 12 days!

Harvest, use & storage

Harvesting usually begins around 6-8 weeks after sowing. You can harvest the young leaves and use them as a spicy ingredient in salads or as a cooking vegetable. The mustard seeds themselves can be harvested in late summer when the seed capsules are brown and dry. These can then be used to make mustard or as a spice. It is best to store the dried seeds in a cool, dry place in airtight containers - this will keep them fresh and aromatic for a long time.

Tips & Tricks

A tip for a successful harvest: To keep pests such as cabbage flies away, you can regularly spray the plants with water or cover them. Sinapis alba is also a wonderful green manure that loosens the soil and enriches nutrients. You can simply dig up the plants when they have reached their full size to improve the soil for future plantings.

Did you know that white mustard is not only used as a spice, but also as a medicinal plant? The seeds contain valuable essential oils and mustard oil glycosides, which have anti-inflammatory and digestive effects. Sinapis alba is also an excellent bee pasture - the pretty yellow flowers attract many pollinators, which also benefits your garden.
