With the right cultivation steps, you can successfully cultivate this demanding plant.

Sowing instructions

The cultivation of Digitalis lanataalso known as "Grecian Foxglove", is easy and rewarding. The best time for sowing is in spring (March to May) or fall (September to October). Scatter the seeds on well-drained, humus-rich soil and cover them only lightly with substrate - they are light germinators. Keep the seeds evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging. A germination temperature of 18-22 °C is ideal. The germination time is about 2-3 weeks. Plant the young plants 30-40 cm apart to give them enough space to grow.

Harvest, use & storage

After about a year, the plants develop their typical thimble-like inflorescences, which are not only visually impressive but also have medicinal potential. The leaves of Digitalis lanata contain medicinally active substances that are used in pharmacy. Make sure you only use them with specialist knowledge or under the guidance of an expert, as the plant is poisonous. To store seeds, harvest the ripe seed capsules, dry them in an airy place and store them in an airtight container - this will keep them germinable for several years.

Tips and tricks

  • Choose a sunny to semi-shady location to promote vigorous growth.
  • Water the plant regularly but sparingly - it prefers well-drained, dry soil.
  • Remove faded inflorescences to strengthen the plant or leave them to collect seeds.
  • Wear gloves when caring for the plant, as contact with the plant can cause skin irritation.

Worth knowing

The Grecian Foxglove originates from south-eastern Europe and is known for its elegant appearance. In addition to its use in medicine, it is also a valuable ornamental plant that attracts butterflies and bees. Digitalis lanata is a biennial plant, but often produces an impressive display of flowers in its second year.
